CODE AMBER ALERT

The Pride of Winslow

Gone but not forgotten
The United Men of Winslow would like to give our condolences to Brother Mike Jones, one of our faithful members, and his family for the loss of their son Davon Jones.  Davon was fatally shot in Camden, New Jersey on June 24, 2009 for simply being in the wrong place at the wrong time.  He was only 16 years old.

Davon was a happy-go-lucky young man who looked forward to spending the summer listening to music and training in hopes of joining and starting for Winslow Township High School's football team as a junior in the fall.

We, the United Men of Winslow, encourage Brother Mike Jones and his family to lean on your friends for strength, and always remember how much you are cared about.  May the peace which comes from the memories of love shared, comfort you now and in the days ahead.

Stellar student earns MIT Scholarship

Winslow Township High School senior Cody Coleman will tell you that his early days growing up were not as ideal as you could imagine, but that did not stop him from working hard to achieve greatness.  He did well in school, and took honors, and advanced placement courses.

Because of his high academic achievement, Cody was accepted to Drexel University, The College of New Jersey, New York University, the University of California at Berkley, Rennsaelear Polytech, Cornell University, Columbia University, the University of Pennsylvania, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

Cody chose MIT, which offered him a full-ride scholarship.  He plans on majoring in Computer Engineering with a minor in Business.

Record number inducted into National Honor Society

Fifty-six students from Winslow Township High School were inducted into membership of the National Honor Society in a ceremony held at the school on March 26, 2009.  Members were selected for meeting high standards of scholarship, service, leadership, and character.

The National Honor Society ranks as one of the oldest and most prestigious national organizations for high school students.  Chapters exist in more than 60 percent of the nation’s high schools and, since 1921, millions of students have been selected for membership.  Millions of dollars in scholarships have been awarded to senior members since 1945 by the sponsoring organization, the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP).

NFL the next test for Sicklerville, New Jersey native

Shonn Greene, a Winslow Township High School football star, heads to footballs elite league to showcase his talents.  The 5-11, 227 pound junior was taken on the first pick of the third round by the New York Jets, who traded third- , fourth- , and seventh-round picks to the Detroit Lions for the chance to draft the Iowa running back.

Greene, from Sicklerville, New Jersey, set Iowa single-season records last year with 1,850 yards and 20 touchdowns.  He won the prestigious Doak Walker Award as the nation's top running back.  Shonn rushed for 100 yards or more in every game last season and was named first team All-American by the Associated Press, Sporting News and American Football Coaches Association.

Six Winslow High students advance to Regional Consumer Bowl Competition

Under the guidance of Mrs. Jena Clark, six WTHS students came in first place at the county NJ Consumer Bowl Competition.  The outstanding team of Cody Coleman, Megan Donahue, Thomas Keppel, Nida Khan, Katie Moran and Courtney Quinn beat teams from Audubon High School, Camden County Technical School, and Triton Regional to advance to the Regional competition.  We wish them the best of luck!

The New Jersey High School Consumer Bowl Competition uses a game-show format to test students’ knowledge of consumer issues.  Competing as teams, students answer questions about “real life” topics dealing with credit, new and used cars, health clubs, telemarketing and other general consumer topics.   This knowledge gives them the power to spot scams and protect themselves from fraud and dishonest business practices.

The New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs introduced the NJ Consumer Bowl Competition in 1997 as a statewide competition.  By 2001, the Consumer Bowl Competition had registered 94 schools located in 20 counties to participate.  The competition has three rounds of competition: county, regional and State.
